Naked Range Reds

There are two main attributes of our vineyard that help us to produce high quality red wines; our steep north facing slopes and the lean 'boney' soil. The steep north facing slopes work as a sun trap which aids ripening and provides natural protection against grapevine diseases when the weather can turn quite cool late in the season. Growers on the valley floor often get quite nervous in the few weeks prior to harvest because they know a heavy downpour of rain can cause their grapes to swell up with water, diluting both sugar and flavour. This is not a concern for us as our steep slopes drain very quickly.

'Leafy' vines can often produce wines with undesirable 'vegetal' characters. The lean soils, at Jansz Estate, allow us to grow vines without excessive vegative growth, thereby creating a vine in good natural balance. Ideal for producing red wines with intense fruit flavour, colour and structure.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon was released in November 2002.
Typical of Naked Range Cabernet Sauvignon it is tightly structured and showing the potential to age very well. Buy a case and try one every six months. This is a great exercise to see how good red wine ages. Send us an email and let us know how you think it's aging and when you think it's drinking best.
Aromas of blackcurrant, berry fruit and a very subtle hint of mintiness. The palate, still quite young, is tightly structured, but has a great balance of tannins, acid and clean oak.

Pinot Noir 2003

Some of the finest examples of Australian Pinot Noir originate from the Yarra Valley. The 2003 Jansz Estate Pinot Noir is no exception. Cropped from low yielding wines and aged in French oak this wine can be enjoyed with a variety of foods including duck, chicken and quail. This is a finely textured and balanced wine. Layered with strawberry and dark cherry fruit characters with some underlying spice. The palate is savoury and supple with some added complexities from the use of French oak barriques.

Cabernet Merlot 2001

Merlot has long been considered a great variety for blending with Cabernet Sauvignon because of its ability to soften and round out the often hard and tannic nature of Cabernet. Our aim was to produce a full bodied red, with a soft palate and well balanced oak. We believe we have done just that.
The nose reveals ripe blackberry and plum with some underlying hints of cherry and coconut. The palate is smooth and warm with mocha and Christmas pudding spice.
This wine is designed to drink now, but is also suited to short term cellaring.

Merlot 2001

The first vintage of the Naked Range Merlot. A highly prized variety but viticulturally, difficult to produce. The 2001 vintage throughout this region was almost perfect, with good spring rains, warm summer temperatures andwith good fruit set, making Merlot in the Yarra Valley exceptional. This Merlot displays typical varietal characters of plum, mulberry and berry fruits with hints of cinammon spice and mocha. Matured in American Oak the vanilla overtures are soft and mellow, allowing the fruit characters of this variety to be appreciated. This medium-bodied wine is integrated with fine tannins and is suitable for medium length cellaring.
